About The Waterwheel Cuckoo Clock
Most cuckoo clocks do one thing when they strike the hour. This Black Forest waterwheel cuckoo clock does five — and watching it all happen at once is genuinely wonderful.
The music starts. The cuckoo emerges and calls. On the balcony above the clock face three figures come to life — two couples begin to turn in a dancing motion, their colorful painted attire catching the eye as they move. On the left side of the clock the waterwheel begins to turn, its blue painted spokes rotating with the steady rhythm of a mill wheel that has been turning for centuries. And at the base shelf on the right side a man seated at a table raises his beer stein to his lips in a satisfied toast. All of this happens simultaneously, every time the clock marks the hour or half hour, and it never gets old.
The clock itself is a beautifully detailed half-timbered chalet — one of the most recognizable architectural styles of the Black Forest region. The white plaster panels with dark brown timber framing give the front of the chalet its characteristic geometric pattern, and the dark wood vertical plank siding of the upper story adds depth and texture to the overall composition. A steep dark roof with a sharp peaked gable rises above everything, and the cuckoo door sits perfectly centered below the roofline.
The balcony rail where the dancing figures stand runs the full width of the chalet facade, its carved balusters giving it a proper architectural detail. Small painted flower accents appear on the chalet walls, and the base shelf of the clock is painted with hand painted edelweiss and blue alpine flowers across its front edge — a lovely finishing detail that ties the whole color palette of the clock together.
On the left side of the clock a mountain scene with a small chalet and trees creates additional depth, and the waterwheel is positioned at the base of this scene exactly where you would expect a mill wheel to sit. On the right side of the base shelf sheep graze near a stone bridge while a shepherd tends them — a pastoral scene of complete Black Forest tranquility that plays out inches away from the man cheerfully drinking his beer.
The black clock face with white Roman numerals and white hands is bold and legible — a slightly different and very elegant choice compared to the warm brown faces of more traditional chalet clocks. Three pine cone shaped weights hang below on chains, one each for the timekeeping, the cuckoo and music mechanism, and the animation drive.

This waterwheel cuckoo clock is powered by three pine cone shaped weights that hang on chains below the clock. Pull the chains to raise the weights once per day to keep the clock running. When the music plays on the hour and half hour the dancing couples rotate, the waterwheel turns, and the man raises his beer stein — all simultaneously. The cuckoo calls once on the half hour and counts the full number of hours on the hour with the gong and music sounding alongside. A night shutoff lever allows you to silence the cuckoo and music during sleeping hours — consult the included instructions for your specific model.
