When the silver mines failed and the region had to find another way to live, the carvers turned to toys, and they have been making them ever since. A toymaker nutcracker is therefore a piece of woodcraft depicting the man who does woodcraft, and there is a real warmth in the joke.
He is dressed like a working craftsman rather than a king. A round brown cap sits on his head, and his long white hair and full beard spill out beneath it. His navy blue jacket is fastened with brass buttons and belted at the waist with a proper leather belt and square buckle.
