He is dressed for parade. His shako is deep blue with a gold sunburst badge, a white plume rising from the crown, and gold tassels swinging at either side. Gold epaulets sit at his shoulders. A white crossbelt runs across his chest, buttons run down his front, and his gaiters are laced in a fine diamond pattern down to the boot. Every one of these is a small piece of turning and painting, and the effect is a figure who looks like he is about to be inspected and knows it.
His rifle is slung at his shoulder — a slim wooden barrel with a fixed bayonet, held in place at his side. And his name is carved into the base, which is a small touch and a lovely one. It says the workshop was proud enough of the piece to sign what it is.
