About the Mountaineer Hat Pin
The Mountaineer hat pin brings the spirit of the Alpine climb to your hat — a little scene of a feathered hat resting on a mountaineer’s pick-axe, with edelweiss and a Germany crest alongside. Like all of our German hat pins, it’s made in Bavaria, cast in silver-tone metal with fine, detailed relief. At 2 by 1¼ inches, it’s one of the larger, more eye-catching pins in the range.
The detail rewards a close look. A traditional Alpine hat sits at the center, complete with its own feather and edelweiss tucked in the band, resting across a mountaineer’s pick-axe — the tool that carried climbers up the high peaks. A spray of feathers fans out behind, and to the side sits a crisp enamel shield in the national black-red-gold, marked “Germany” above the federal eagle.
Together these are the symbols of the mountaineer and the high Alps — the hat, the axe, the edelweiss that grows where only climbers go. It’s the kind of German hat pin that speaks to a love of the mountains and the climb, and it wears beautifully on a Trachten or hunting hat.
Personalizing a German hat with pins is part of a long tradition, where each pin says something about the wearer. This one tells a whole story — of the peaks, the climb, and the Alpine country itself.

- Made in Bavaria and imported
- Size: 2″ x 1¼”
- Standard safety-style pin closure

How to Attach
Pinning it on is simple. Fasten the safety-style closure through the side of your German hat’s band the way you would any pin, positioning the scene upright so it faces forward on the crown. When you want it off, just unfasten the pin — it won’t leave a mark, so you can move it between hats or collect several and change them out.

Authentic German Craftsmanship
Every German hat pin we carry comes from Bavaria, cast and finished with the detail that sets a real Trachten pin apart from a cheap stamped copy. The hat, the pick-axe, the edelweiss, and the German crest are all part of an Alpine tradition that goes back generations.
Personalizing a hat with pins is part of that same tradition — a hat tells a story through what’s pinned to it. If you’d like to understand how these hats and their decorations are worn, our guide to the history of German hats covers both the story and the practical side, and you’ll find the perfect wool hat to wear it on in our German hats collection.
