His crown, his robes, his scepter, and even his beard are worked in the warm reddish-brown of baked Lebkuchen and finished with fine white piping, exactly the way a real gingerbread man is iced. It is a piece of genuine wit, and it works because Ulbricht plays it completely straight.
The detail rewards a close look. His crown is banded and piped in white, topped with a small finial. His tunic is scored and iced in the same hand, with a heart at the center of his chest — the oldest and most traditional decoration in German gingerbread work, and a lovely thing to find on a king.
