About the Edelweiss Hat Brush

The Edelweiss hat brush is one of the most popular ways to finish an Alpine hat without the cost of a genuine chamois Gamsbart — a real boar-hair brush that looks the part and carries the same upright, traditional shape. Like all of our German hat brushes, it’s imported from Bavaria — handmade by Stöckelmaier and bound by hand so the bristles hold their fan and last for years. Standing 4-3/4 inches tall, it sits proudly on the side of the crown the way a hat brush should.

The brush itself is made from natural boar hair in deep browns and near-black, tipped with a warm golden frost that catches the light at the top of the fan. Boar hair is coarser and stiffer than chamois, which gives this brush its rugged, full body and that thick, upright look that’s long been popular on hunting hats. It’s bound tightly at the base so it keeps its shape through a long festival day and springs back rather than flattening out.

What gives this one its name is the silver edelweiss medallion fixed to the front of the holder — the little star-shaped alpine flower that’s become a symbol of the mountains themselves. It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of thing people notice and ask about, and it ties the brush to one of the best-loved stories in Alpine tradition.

A German hat brush goes back to the Alpine hunting tradition, where hunters wore a brush of chamois hair on their hats as a mark of skill. Over generations the look became part of wider Trachten folk dress, worn at festivals and on hunting hats alike — and a boar-hair brush like this one makes that tradition accessible to everyone.

Features

  • Traditional boar-hair brush with warm golden-frosted tips
  • Fixed silver edelweiss medallion on the holder
  • Handmade by Stöckelmaier of Bavaria and imported
  • 4-3/4 inches tall including the holder
  • Silver holder with a standard safety-style pin closure
  • An affordable alternative to a genuine chamois Gamsbart
  • Pins easily onto any Alpine, Tyrolean, or hunting-style wool hat

How to Attach

Pinning it on is about as easy as it sounds. Slide the pin through the side of your German hat’s band and fasten it like you would any safety pin, then angle the brush so it stands upright and slightly back, rising above the crown. When you want it off, just unfasten the pin — it won’t leave a mark, so you can move it from hat to hat or lay it flat to store between seasons.

Authentic German Craftsmanship

Every German hat brush we carry comes from Bavaria, and this one is handmade by Stöckelmaier, bound by hand in the same tradition that’s been finishing Alpine hats for generations. Boar-hair brushes like this one make that tradition affordable, giving you the full, upright look of a classic hat brush at a price that suits an everyday festival hat.

The brush goes back to the Alpine hunting tradition, where a chamois brush worn on the hat was a quiet mark of skill in some of the hardest country in Europe. If you’d like to understand how these hats and their decorations are worn, our guide to the history of German hats covers both the story and the practical side, and you’ll find the perfect wool hat to pin this to over in our German hats collection.
