About the Frosted Amber Hat Feather
Warm copper and amber tones make the Frosted Amber hat feather one of the richest-looking pieces we carry — the kind of finish that turns a plain wool hat into proper Alpine Trachten. Like all of our German hat feathers, it’s imported from Bavaria — handmade by Faustmann and arranged by hand so every feather sits at the right angle, holds its shape, and lasts for years instead of wilting or shedding after one season. At around 8 inches long, it’s a full, glowing arrangement that catches the light and the eye.
The name says it all — this one is built around amber. Warm, almond-brown and copper feathers flare out around the sides, giving the whole piece its frosted, glowing tone. A long, smooth black rooster coque feather sweeps up the back and gives it height, while tucked in among the amber you’ll spot small pops of bright dyed red and iridescent forest green — just enough color to make it lively without stealing the show.
At the heart of the arrangement sits a speckled guinea fowl feather, its black-and-white polka-dot pattern framed by a heavy, fluffy burst of soft white down at the base. That contrast — crisp speckles against soft white, warm amber against glossy black — is what gives the Frosted Amber its character. It’s the kind of German hat feather that looks as good on a hunting hat as it does at a festival.
Wearing a feather on your hat is a Bavarian tradition that goes back centuries, from a time when the type and size of the feather could tell people where you were from, what you did, or how good a hunter you were. This one carries that history with it — the sort of piece that’s genuinely hard to find made the right way anymore.
Features
- Warm amber and copper feathers with a black rooster coque, guinea fowl center, and soft white down
- Bright dyed red and green accent feathers
- Handmade by Faustmann of Bavaria and imported
- About 8 inches long including the holder
- Silver ring holder with a standard safety-style clasp
- Pins easily onto any Alpine, Tyrolean, or Bavarian wool hat
How to Attach
Pinning it on is about as easy as it sounds. Slide the clasp through the side of your German hat’s band and fasten it like you would any safety pin, then angle the feather so it stands up and slightly back, with the tall feathers rising above the crown. When you want it off, just unfasten the clasp — it won’t leave a mark, so you can move it from hat to hat or lay it flat to store between seasons.

Authentic German Craftsmanship
Every hat feather we carry comes from Bavaria, and this one is handmade by Faustmann, a maker working in the same tradition that’s been finishing Alpine hats for generations. The feathers are picked and arranged by hand rather than churned out by a machine, and that’s really the whole difference — it’s why an authentic German hat feather looks the way it does and holds up the way it should.
The custom started with hunters, who would pull a feather from their catch and tuck it into their cap as a quiet mark of skill. Over the years those single feathers grew into the layered, colorful arrangements people wear today. If you’d like to dig into where it all comes from, our guide to the history of German hats covers both the story and the practical side, and you’ll find the perfect wool hat to pin this to over in our German hats collection.
