The forest king nutcracker takes the oldest subject in the tradition — the crowned monarch — and moves him out of the palace and into the woods. Christian Ulbricht has swapped the gold and scarlet for green and brown, the jeweled scepter for a carved acorn, and the throne room for a forest floor. It is a genuinely original idea, and it works because the German relationship with the forest runs deeper than most people outside the country realize. The woods are where the fairy tales come from, where the carvers got their wood, and where a great deal of the national imagination still lives.
His crown is a deep burgundy dome with a gold band and a small finial at the top — regal, but softened, more mushroom cap than coronet if you look at it a certain way. His tunic is a rich forest green with gold buttons and a proper leather belt at the waist, and a heavy dark cape falls from his shoulders and pools behind him. Acorns hang from cords at either side of his belt, swinging where a lesser king would have hung his sword.
In his hand he carries a slender scepter topped with a carved acorn. And at his feet — this is the detail that makes the whole figure — a small cluster of hand-painted mushrooms grows right out of the base. He is not standing on a pedestal. He is standing on the ground.
