About the Child Alpine Fedora
Most alpine hats made for children are soft felt costume pieces meant to last one Oktoberfest. This child alpine fedora is the opposite: a genuine loden wool hat from Stöckelmaier, cut in the same tradition as the grown-up hats but sized for a smaller head. A child wearing one isn’t wearing a novelty — they’re wearing the real thing, which is exactly why these tend to become the hat a kid actually asks to put on.
The shape does a lot of the work. Instead of the tall Trachtenhut that only really belongs at a festival, this is the lower fedora line — a soft center crease, pinched sides, a brim that snaps down. It sits naturally on a child and doesn’t look like they’re playing dress-up, so it carries just as well over a fall jacket on the walk to school as it does with full Tracht at a Verein event.
Weight matters more than people expect with a child’s hat. Too heavy and it’s stifling indoors; too thin and it feels like felt and loses its shape by spring. This one lands in between — substantial enough to keep its crown and brim through real wear, light enough that a child will actually keep it on. It’s the difference between a hat that lives on a shelf and one that gets worn.
The trim is what makes it unmistakably alpine. A twisted green cord circles the base in several strands, and at the side a soft white plume is paired with a longer brown-and-black speckled pheasant feather — two feathers set together for a livelier look than a single quill. It’s fixed permanently into the band, so nothing has to be arranged or attached; the hat arrives looking exactly as it should. For a child’s first proper German hat, that finished-on-arrival detail is half the charm.

Fit & Sizing
Alpine hats are sized by head circumference in centimeters, and this one comes in 48, 50 and 52 cm. Measure by running a soft tape around the child’s head just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead — where the hat actually sits — and match that number to the size. If the measurement falls between two sizes, the wool has enough natural give to settle in with wear, so most families size to the nearer number rather than up.
Because the hats are sized purely by measurement, there’s no separate boys’ or girls’ cut — any child whose head matches the centimeter size will wear it the same way.
Size Chart
Our hats are sized by head circumference in centimeters. To find your size, wrap a soft tape measure around the head about 1 cm above the eyebrows and over the ears, and match the measurement to the cm size below. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger.

Care
This hat is dry clean only — never wash it in water, which will distort the wool and ruin the shape. For everyday upkeep, brush the wool lightly with a soft hat brush or nail brush, always in one direction. To lift lint or dust, wrap a piece of tape around your hand, sticky side out, and pat it gently over the surface — it clears away what a brush leaves behind. Take a little extra care around the feather when you brush. If the hat catches rain, let it dry naturally on its crown or a hook rather than the brim so it holds its shape, and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct heat. Treated this way, it will keep its form for many years.

Authentic German Craftsmanship
The alpine hat is one of the oldest living pieces of German and Austrian folk dress, and its loden green and feathered band have carried across generations of styles. What’s rarer is finding that tradition made honestly in a child’s size — most children’s versions cut corners the adult hats never would. Stöckelmaier doesn’t, which is why a child in one of these looks like a smaller version of the real thing rather than a kid in a costume.
If you’d like to understand where these hats come from and how the styles differ, our guide to traditional German hats traces their history and what sets an authentic piece apart. You’ll find the rest of what we carry in our full German hats collection, and our Stöckelmaier brand page tells the story of the workshop behind them — every hat chosen the same way, for being the genuine article.
