Authentic German Weather Houses from the Black Forest
A German weather house works on a simple principle that hasn't needed improving in two hundred years. A length of catgut or twisted hair tightens and relaxes as the humidity changes, turning the small platform inside so one figure comes out and the other retreats. Fair weather brings out the woman, damp weather brings out the man — and the little house on your wall tells you what's coming without a battery or a forecast.
Ours are handcrafted in Germany's Black Forest by Engstler — the same workshop that makes our Black Forest cuckoo clocks — with the carved detail, hand-painted figures in traditional alpine dress, and woodland touches the tradition calls for. You'll find classic chalet and farmhouse designs — including one with a younger couple in the style many call a Hansel-and-Gretel weather house — some with deer and other Black Forest details.
They make unusually good gifts because they're genuinely interactive — people check them, notice them, and remember who gave them. If you'd like to learn more, read about the history and tradition of German weather houses, or our German weather house buying guide walks through choosing one.
