Traditional Carved Cuckoo Clocks

The traditional carved style is what most people picture when they think of a Black Forest cuckoo clock. Instead of a house shape, the case is a framed carving decorated with oak or maple leaves, perched birds, and often hand-painted flowers, with a carved bird crowning the top and the cuckoo calling from a little door above the dial. It's the oldest and most recognizable style, and it has been made in the Black Forest for well over a century.

These are authentic pieces, hand-carved and crafted in Germany. Most of our traditional clocks run on genuine mechanical movements wound by weights and chains, while some of the smaller souvenir clocks are battery-operated, so you can choose the size and price that suits you.

If you're deciding between styles, our cuckoo clock buying guide explains one-day versus eight-day movements and what to look for, and our guide to VdS certification covers the mark that verifies a mechanical clock was genuinely made in the Black Forest. A traditional cuckoo clock also makes a memorable traditional German Christmas gift — one that becomes an heirloom.
