About Perzy – The Original Vienna Snow Globes

Perzy is the original. In 1900, a young Viennese instrument maker named Erwin Perzy was experimenting with ways to create a brighter surgical lamp when he noticed something unexpected — tiny particles suspended in water fell in a way that reminded him of snow. That accidental discovery became the world's first snow globe, and the family has been making them by hand in the same Vienna workshop ever since.

Now in its fourth generation, the Perzy family continues to produce each snow globe from real blown Viennese glass, filled with their closely guarded formula for artificial snow that falls more slowly and more beautifully than anything you will find in a mass-produced imitation. The scenes inside — Christmas trees, snowmen, nutcrackers, nativity figures — are small, unhurried, and unmistakably Austrian in character.

What sets a Perzy snow globe apart is not just the craftsmanship, though that alone is worth noting. It is the continuity. The same family, the same workshop, the same commitment to doing it the way it has always been done. Presidents have ordered them. Collectors seek them out. And once you hold one, you understand why a family has devoted four generations to getting the snow exactly right.
